Mulan It was bound to happen sooner or later... I came back a few hours after I'd posted the reply, and thought, "wlll you look at that. Now where did she pick that up?" Pretty excited that she'd taken an interest in fishing, with poignant commentary and insightful questions, no less.

Valis I've been taking all of my salmon catch from the last year straight to specialty smoker. He brines, hot smokes, and vacuum packs the fish in 4oz. bags, frozen when I pick them up. I love the fish bbq'd or fried, but pepper smoked is my favorite. Rachel and I once came across a general store way out in the boolies of Vancouver Island, B.C., where they had a large oak barrel full of smoked rainbow trout. Heads, tails, and all; dry, flaky, and delicious. The sides of meat would easily separate from the spine and ribs, yum. If we get any large dolly's next week, I'll smoke them too. P.M. your address and I'll ship you a slab or two.

my husband and i have been married a little over a year now and it has been the happiest year of my life.

i have finally found someone that i truly love and that truly loves me.

he's also my best friend.

I prefer that toilet paper dispense from the bottom, Rachel prefers it over the top. I have no preference on toilet lids up or down, Rachel prefers them down when not in use. Guess whose preferences prevail in our home? And it matters not one iota to me...

I prefer my steak well done, that matters.

Hillbilly You really sound like you love that farm livin', Hillbilly. You know, those early hours frighten some of us. I always say, "It's not when you get up, it's what you do after you get up that counts." But I generally have no difficulty rising, and I'm wide awake bright and early for fishing, diving, or biking. Pleased to meet you.

Notperfectyet Working Sundays? For you, I'd say, think of the question more figuratively. For instance, how are you investing the time you formerly spent in J-ho's pursuits? If it's all real estate, that's O.K. too, that is what I love about having this kind of freedom. It was great to meet you, and your ex's twice-removed cousin's sister, in Dallas. Oh, and I'm listening now...

Little Toe I'll dance with anyone for the chance to dive for scallops and lobster. Dust off your gear. We'll work something out for next year.

Calamityjane Give us a call If you're out to the island again. That makes for a beautiful trip; the travelling is almost as enjoyable as the destination.

Winston Smith, Little Toe, Xena, Megadude, and all divers and beach bums- We're going to Mexico over the holidays. 2 weeks, from a little before Christmas through the first week of the new year. We'll pass on more detailed info as we decide on lodging and firm up the dates, but think about it. Winston suggested a diving apostafest (brilliant, man, brilliant) so let's just do it. We're looking at Cozumel or Cancun, both destinations have all-inclusive packages and activities for children. Anyone interested?

Winston Smith It was great meeting you as well. Pool time was awesome, I kept wishing we'd been able to use it all night. But then, accidental drownings of inebriates are a real downer at any gathering. I like the idea of a tropical dive destination apostafest. The one time I got to dive in warm clear water (Hawaii) just blew me away, leaving me starving for more. You cracked me up a while back, with a line about "branding the ones you want to keep." That left me with an indelible, hysterical mental image. Thank you. We've got to get together again.

Princess I didn't leave you out, hon. We exchanged glares, remember?

Doodle You know, there just might be a slim chance that I might one day wear a kilt. I liked Savage's, and Little Toe's was classic. I've spotted a couple of others around town lately too, worn as regular work attire. How do you think folks would react if their plumber showed up in a kilt? Embroidered, of course, with, "Steve's Plumbing"?

Pinned Blouse The "Church Folk" watch sounds hilarious. But doing it at Wal Mart, that's sheer genius. You could sell that story line to the writers of "South Park".

Wow. I'm a bit overwhelmed. I just got back from work, and all these replies... I don't want to miss anyone, so here goes...

Craig and Kate thanks for the welcome! Rachel and I are looking forward to the upcoming ride, and dinner(s) afterward. You folks know you're welcome to stay at my Mom's place Saturday, right?

Patio A barbershop quartet? what a blast. I need to resurrect my music...

Puter Jeeeeez Puter, last week Gumby says I'm a shiny drunk, and now you've got me hitting a bong. Just like an elder and P.O. to go around spreading rumors... I do like the occasional herbally enhanced cookie, though. Ready to try some cold water diving? It's not the Bahamas, but we still have a great time.

Bull01lay Motorbiking in England? That sounds like a vacation to me... It's been a long time since I rocketed around Austin on my Kawasaki, with only a pair of shades to protect my poor head. But the wind whipping by, it put me in a moving trance, shattered only by the occasional giant Junebug on my forehead. Man, that's a feeling I'll never forget.

Pleasurdome and Pinned Blouse Rest and sleep are priceless and underrated. Unless you find yourselves in Dallas, with a small group itching for some ear splitting rock and roll in the Deep Ellum district. In that case, sleep when you're old.

Ozzie Don't really know what kept me, I just didn't feel the spirit til now. And right now, I'm in front of the computer, with Rachel glaring at me from the doorway...

xjw_b12 Glad to hear you're making use of the great outdoors. When you mention the "Island", are you speaking of Vancouver Island? regardless, B.C. is an incredibly beautiful province. Tofino, on Vancouver Island's West coast, holds a special place in my heart. I really want to get the whole family back up there.

Xena How could I have left Dallas without knowing you're a diver? It was great to be back in Texas, if only for a little while. Austin is next, and we'll need you as a guide, no doubt. Maybe a little door to door work would help draw converts to the apostate cause... Nah. Small parties are the best. I'm already missing Mexican food... CSG made us a feast, but I didn't bring any home. Darn.

In two weeks, the King men and I will be travelling to the foothills of the Cascade mountains, to fish for the fiercely predatious "Dolly Varden" trout. If I make it back alive, I'll post pics.

After reading this board for quite a while, I've finally been moved to post. I was inspired by our trip to the Dallas Apostachilifest, where Princess and I met lots of terrific people in various stages of exit from the J-ho's. Everyone there had a story, many of them quite painful, and this thread isn't intended to minimize their experience in any way. It was a privelege to meet the people whose stories I've read in this forum, and I wish you all the best. The thing that really made the trip for me, though, was hearing about the interests, pursuits, and passions of others. I can still hear Megadude likening a Cozumel drift dive to "flying". His sister Jade, a recent college graduate, overcame her fear of water to become a diver. Her husband Greg lit up when the conversation turned to diving, and the night ended much too quickly. I wish you could have seen the looks on the faces of Valis and Catholic School Girl as they described trout rising to take a fly, or the reverence with which they spoke of their gear and technique. Wild Turkey had me convinced that there must be no better place in the world to party than Shreveport, Louisiana, and I intend to confirm that in person some day. There were a host of other great discussions as well, all of which led me to ask of you, tonight, "What are you doing with your Sunday's?" Most of us have a little more time on our hands, after our eviction from dubdumb. What are you doing with your time, now that you free to spend it as you wish?

The following pictures show what I'm doing with some of my Sundays. I love to scuba dive, and Rachel's brother Randy is my regular dive partner. We travel to a spot about an hour away from Edmonds on Washington's Hood Canal, and shuck oysters on the beach during low tide. This trip, Randy and I dove for crab, adding 5 crab and one huge scallop to the dinner table. Rachel's father, Dave, and another brother, Stephen, shucked several quarts of oysters, and dug up about 4 1/2 gallons of steamer clams as well. The tidal inlet here is home to Bald Eagles, Sea Otters, and lots of other wild critters. Shucking oysters, knocking back a few swimming in Tobasco, sipping cold drinks, shooting the sh**t, solving the world's problems all the while. It is always a great trip, and I wanted to share it with you.

This is me displaying a couple of prime examples of Dungeness crab. First lesson, always grab the backside. Of course, there are a lot of people in Dallas who already know that.

Alas, my own children, Zoe and Rhys, could not be persuaded to try oysters, clams, or even crab. They had hot dogs, the universally accepted food for kids.
